RAISING A RETRIEVER

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers Chesie Pups

Every Chesapeake Bay Retriever pup should know at least five basic commands: heel, sit, down, stay and come. Even if you don't take your Chesapeake Bay Retriever beyond the basics these commands are absolutely essential in making every Chesapeake Bay Retriever a family member. Even if a Chesie doesn't understand your words, the pups understand your voice. However you treat a Chesie he never forgets it.  If a Chesie is raised with violence he becomes aggressive if he is trained with patience and love he is full of that as well.  If you're not prepared to properly train your Chesapeake Bay Retriever, you probably shouldn't get one. But, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are one of the easiest dogs to train because they live for your love, attention and acceptance.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever pups learn how to get what it needs and wants early  Pups will  experiment with different ways of attracting your attention to see what it takes to get what it wants.  Some Chesie antics are a little mischievous and comical.  However without training these antics can become out of control.  Your goal is to teach your Chesapeake Bay Retriever pup what are the socially acceptable ways of getting your attention and approval.  If a Chesie pup learns right from the start that your way of doing things results in praise and affection, while contrary ways result in firm, unvarying correction, it will choose the correct  way.

You must be persistent, and consistent in raising a  Chesapeake Bay Retriever. This doesn't require that you have to be mean or tough you only have to be patient and consistent.    Chesapeake Bay Retrievers need to be confident that you will consistently respond with the same reaction every time when he tugs on a leash improperly. In training you need to consistently encourage, prohibit, or correct behaviors. Inconsistency destroys the sense of security that Chesapeake Bay Retrievers need.  Chesies are far happier with good training and a secure home. A well-trained Chesapeake Bay Retriever knows exactly what the puppy should do and what it cannot do.  The only way to train is by consistent reinforcement. A  Chesapeake Bay Retriever that is praised every time it does right and corrected every time it does wrong will easily learn and memorize good behaviors.

CHESAPEAKE ATTITUDE

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers Championship Breeders

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers have had an unfair reputation of being one man dogs and as  having an aggressive temperament.  A better description is that they are possessive of "their" property food bowl, yard, family, house, females etc.  They rarely bite people but other dogs that threaten them or their possessions are often fair game for male dog fights.  Chessies have a tendency to guard family, property and to be territorial.  Other breeds have been bred for show to the extent that some dogs have to be force taught to retrieve. There is no need to force a Chesapeake to retrieve.  Chesapeakes stay at home and don't normally follow strangers home like labs and Goldens.  They aren't easily stolen by strangers nor will a Chesapeake easily retrieve for others.

If you want to own a Chesapeake Bay Retriever you will need to have strong, consistent rules as an owner.  Either you will be the boss or they will. They are single minded and capable of independent thought and work.  Teach a Chesapeake Bay Retriever a chore or job and they will do it whether or not you are home.  Chesies are affectionate and athletic but they are not recommended for inexperienced or dog owners that are not willing to take the time to train them. A consistent, kind and playful approach is all it takes to train a Chesapeake Bay Retriever.  You can read about how to train your Chesapeake Bay Retriever in our training section.

Breeders today breed a far more gentle temperament dog.  Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are very attached to their owners and the most common complaint today is that as a puppy they learn to curl up in your lap and still do it as a 70 to 100 lb male and never leave your side as you walk around the house.  Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are very affectionate and attached to family.  However if a Chesapeake Bay the dog is to become a good quality family member each member of the family must train him or he will bond with just the trainer.

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are not just large brown curly coated labs (thank GOD!).  Chesapeakes have a completely different type of personality and temperament.   Chesapeakes  love to please and if you have specific rules and guidelines for their behavior they find security and comfort in obeying those rules. Chesapeakes love stable homes and house rules and that is also why they don't like intruders as people that don't belong there.  If you go for a walk on a leash and your rule is that they must properly walk besides you then they will obey that rule perfectly and they will remember it for a lifetime.  However, if you train them that dragging you around on a leash is acceptable they may drag you down the street.

Having a Chesapeake Bay Retriever for a hunting companion is pure delight. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers naturally love to swim in cold water hunt and retrieve.  Chesapeakes live to please their master.  On a pro rata Chesapeake Bay Retrievers win far more field trial championships. This is one breed where breeders have not made a non hunting show dog of the Retriever.

CHESAPEAKE TRAINING

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers Training Trainers

Training Chesapeake Bay Retrievers is very easy. Using a qualified trainer helps.  Training starts by housebreaking your Chesapeake Bay Retriever and teaching the simple commands. To housebreak a Chesie the puppy must be given a way to go outside and a chance to urinate and defecate before being brought back inside. Your Chesapeake Bay Retriever must have the chance to do right.   Punishing a dog when it couldn't go outside is your fault not the dog's.  Once inside you should restrict the puppy to a small area to play and sleep, where  it will naturally be reluctant to soil.

When accidents happen, immediately correct the puppy and take it outdoors. Slap your hands or do something sudden to immediately shock or surprise the dog and to break it's concentration and at the same time let it know that it did wrong.  A puppy doesn't understand if you correct it later after it makes an mistake.  You have to correct the puppy while it is in the act of misbehavior.  Young puppies need to eliminate often, so be sure to go outside frequently especially after feedings and any time you suspect there's a need to allow them a chance to do it right. When it does do it right give it immediate approval.  The accidents and the trips will eventually be reduced.  Be patient Chesapeake Bay Retrievers
are like a spouse they are not as intelligent as you are but they want to make you happy so they can eventually learn.

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers appreciate having a designated space of their own, (often by a fireside or in a kitchen normally close to you.  Most housebreaking problems with Chesapeake Bay Retrievers originate with  softhearted children and spouses that let untrained puppys run free in the house. The puppy then falls into the habit of soiling the floors and furniture, and then they complain for years afterward.  If you use a box for housebreaking, make sure it is big enough and never leave a puppy in a crate all day. Give your Chesie a chance to do it right outdoors and praise it for good behavior.
