You can travel on board with a small dog or up to 2 pups as on board luggage. 

Documents Requirements for Domestic Shipping

 The original and 1 copy of a health certificate  dated 10 days or less from the date your animal will be shipped.

 A rabies vaccination certificate issued and signed by a licensed veterinarian and no older that 1 year from the date your animal will be shipped is required. 
  A signed statement that your animal has been offered food and water within four hours of the time that you present it to American Airlines is required.

bullet Feeding and watering instructions must be attached to the kennel or container along with an adequate amount of packaged food. If feeding and watering is not required, written instructions from your accredited veterinarian to not feed or water the animal must be attached to the kennel.
bullet Animals are transported in the same compartments as baggage, mail and other cargo. These compartments are pressurized and maintain a temperature range from 50-70 degrees Fahrenheit.
bullet Shipping Animals in Temperatures Below 50 Degrees Fahrenheit
If the temperature is, or is forecasted to be, under 50 degrees at any city on the animal's routing, a Certificate of Acclimation is required in order for your animal to travel. This certificate must be issued and signed by a licensed veterinarian and dated within 10 days of the shipping date. It must include the shipper's name and address, type of animal and to what temperature below 50 degrees the animal can withstand (but not lower than 20 degrees). Your animal may be accepted as long as the forecasted temperature is not below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, or the temperature noted on the certificate.
bullet Shipping Animals in Temperatures Above 85 Degrees Fahrenheit Warmblooded animals may be accepted for transport using Priority Parcel Service when the temperature exceeds 85 degrees Fahrenheit on nonstop service, or as long as the time at a connecting point does not exceed 45 minutes, unless an embargo is in effect. Due to restrictions in the summer, animals will not be accepted as PPS shipments at airport ticket counters from May 15 through September 15.

 

Shipping Containers

Kennel Guidelines
Kennels must:

 Be wood, metal, plastic or similar material.

 Be leak proof, escape proof and door fastens securely.

 Kennel door must be welded or cast metal (no plastic doors allowed).

  Be large enough for the animal to stand, sit and lie comfortably, and in a natural manner.

  Be outfitted with separate food and watering dishes securely attached inside the kennel so that, the animal can be fed and watered without opening the kennel.

  Be clean,

 Contain absorbent material or litter (towel). Straw, hay or shavings is prohibited.

  Be free of wheels  (remove or tape them)

 Be adequately ventilated. Ventilated area = minimum of 16 percent surface area.

  Not be collapsible or foldable.

  The shipper is required to secure rigid plastic kennels with releasable connectors attached to all four corners that can be removed without the use of tools.

Required Labels
Kennels must:

  Be marked with the words "live animal" on the top and on 2 sides, in letters at least 1 inch high.

  Have attached a health and rabies certificate.

 Have attached labels with the shipper and consignee's name, street address and phone number.

 Have attached labels with food and watering instructions along with a supply of packaged food attached to the outside of the container or attach written instructions from an accredited veterinarian to not feed or water the animal.

  Be marked with "this end up" or directional arrows on at least 2 sides.


Most airport facilities offer for sale four sizes of an FAA approved kennel, subject to availability.

Kennel Types
Kennel type 100 accommodates an animal up to 18 inches long by 7 inches wide by 13 inches tall.

bullet Kennel type 200 accommodates an animal up to 21 inches long by 9 inches wide by 17 inches tall.
bullet Kennel type 400 accommodates an animal up to 29 inches long by 12 inches wide by 24 inches tall.
bullet Kennel type 500 accommodates an animal up to 32 inches long by 13 inches wide by 28 inches tall.


Multiple Animals in One Kennel
Puppies or Kittens
Two puppies or two kittens, that are weaned and are between the ages of 8 weeks to 6 months, can be accommodated in one kennel if they are less than 20 pounds each.


Helpful Hints

  Take along a leash and collar to be used when walking your pet prior to dropping your pet off or your flight departure, on an extended layover or upon arrival.

 Include ID tags with your name and phone number.

  Never transport an animal with a choke collar or muzzle.

  Keep your animal as calm as possible prior to the flight.

  Purchase the kennel as far in advance of travel as possible and allow the animal to become familiar with it to ease the stress of travel.
